FOLLOW-THROUGH: Screwing Ourselves Out of Extraordinary Lives

Akua Auset speaking to her PRO MakeUP Artist Training Program participants on the importance of "follow-through" in life.
Don't run over and trample miracles to get to comfort and convenience. Happiness, Success & Legacy are created by a million little choices and actions we make everyday.

LISTEN. READ. DOWNLOAD.

TRANSCRIPT of Live Recording

"Thank you for making it happen.
No matter how close you were to not or doing it I just congratulate you and I admire you. You have proven yourself to be extraordinary. Because it's very ordinary to give into resistance, obstacles, discomfort, inconvenience...taking a risk when you don't know. But sometimes if you go beyond to the other side of the unknown you will find magic and possibility.

...one of the really critical choices that I made that opened all kinds of doors...later I'll talk about the fact that...there's so many reasons that people don't or aren't able to do something. And really, at the end of the day it doesn't matter.  What matters is that you do it, that you follow through. Because you have no idea what one choice will turn into down the road and it's almost frightening to me that had I'd made another choice I may not have had the career that I had. It was a choice when I went to the agency and they said, "You have really clean and good work, but you need to build your book and come back in six months."

...and me going back and I could say... I mean I don't know what the rest of your life is going to look like but I really feel like you showing up today is like my going back to the agency.

He said that when he told people that, they never came back. Had I not gone back I would have never worked on Hoodlum (film). Had I not worked on Hoodlum I would have never met Stacye Branche and Lunye Hodges who connected me with Michael Jordan and R. Kelly. Had I not worked with Michael Jordan and R. Kelly I would have never gone to LA.  You know it was just like a domino-effect. That's just really the difference between the average, or the so-called-average people and the people who are extraordinary. So just always remember that when you get an opportunity...yeah opportunity, just follow-through with it because you just have no idea...like I think probably the worse thing in life would be to look back on your life and say "oh I didn't do that so I didn't get that over there."  So just be people who are unstoppable. Don't let anything keep you from moving on to the next level. Like whatever it is. Certainly don't let money keep you from things, don't let insecurity...just always in your mind....you're a superhero. Because you're a superhero here [pointing to head] first."

It's all about how well you can serve.

The makeup artist is one of the most powerful people on set or on an assignment because it is the interaction with us that sets the tone or the mood of the talent or client. You can single-handedly make or break the end result because their disposition coming out of your chair will translate on film. Make sure that you are at your best and energy/ mood is uplifting and your work carried out with love so that you will transmit that good vibe to your subject.
Choose what part of the industry suits your personality and expression best.
I am a painter and love to explore different looks, create characters as well as simple, pristine beauty.  I got my start in Chicago in TV spots, so when the director expected the talent camera-ready clean and fresh look in twenty-minutes, it assaulted my artistic sensibility. Perhaps I should have chosen the fashion industry and worked in London. As a young makeup artist it was more about expressing my artistic side as opposed to collecting a big paycheck from a TV spot.
Create a system of documentation.
How do I know I've worked with 100+ celebrities and personalities, 70+ corporations & companies, 50+ photographers, 3 major motion pictures, numerous video and TV directors, magazines, photographers, TV shows and music videos? I have every call sheet from every commercial, film, video I've ever worked on. That becomes a precious resource of documentation and your credit list - which gives you the credibility to get more work. Also, I really wish I would’ve documented EVERY face with a before and after. It would be awesome to have that library of transformation. Document your work because you are building your history and legacy.
Be Creative.
